What kid did not fantasize, at one time or another, about being left alone, completely unsupervised, for a long period of time? Imagine your delight at being able to say or do whatever you wanted, whenever you pleased? You could eat what you liked, go to bed when you decided, miss school, and behave as you please without reproach. You could be your own master. Such a scenario is presented in the novel Lord of the Flies but as events unfold we find that they are not quite as we would have imagined.
William Golding's dark, sobering allegory, set during the Second World War, tells the story of British schoolboys who are marooned on an uninhabited island. As the boys struggle to adapt to their crude but strangely exotic existence, Golding?s contention about the nature of man begins to emerge.
Golding's depiction of human nature paints a rather bleak picture and holds out little hope for the future of mankind. According to Golding when the restraints imposed by civilization are removed and we are allowed to dictate our own social and moral behaviors, we will invariably revert back to what comes naturally and the true savagery borne of the human condition will rear its ugly head. Abounding in symbolism, Lord of the Flies draws a sharp parallel with our modern world, and remains an electrifying masterpiece of literature. As violence, terrorism and conflict escalate throughout the modern world what story could be more topical than Lord of the Flies?
Students are invited to create their own edgy interpretations of the important ideas and understandings that have emerged from their study of timely classic.

Sundance North - Digital Arts Festival

Known to every English-speaking student of the last 50 years and universally acknowledged as one of the finest novels of the last century, Lord of the Flies is given a stunning stage adaptation by Nigel Williams. Now this adaptation is being brought to the stage in an energetic dramatic interpretation of this timely classic by Sage Theatre Productions. Sage Theatre seeks to link their work on stage to other forms of expression in order to foster and provoke thoughtful dialogue with artists and audiences alike. Open communication, collaboration, respect and innovation mark Sage's relationship with writers, theatre professionals, emerging artists and their audiences.
Your task is to create your own adaptation of the novel in an effort to capture the same immediacy as evidenced in the Sage Theatre production. Using digital technologies in thoughtful and deliberate ways you are being challenged to make the vivid scenes and provocative ideas from Golding's novel come alive in ways that are compelling and provoke a strong audience response. Your adaptation of the novel will be presented to a live audience at our own Sundance North Digital Arts Festival scheduled to take place on the evening of March 27th.
You may choose any medium you wish to create your own unique adaptation of the novel. Production teams may want to consider any one or combination of the following to effectively accomplish the task:
a one act play or monologue enhanced with digital technologies, a multimedia presentation that makes effective use of sound, images and significant excerpts from the novel, a 2-3 minute movie, or any other format that effectively conveys powerful ideas from the novel in a provocative manner that will engender a strong audience response.
