Task

What was our Millarville area like in the 1940's?

In the 1940's Millarville was one of many boomtowns in the area where oil-drilling crews would live. Often these crews and their families lived in portable homes on skids. Life was not easy during this time. There were few modern conveniences. If you lived in one of these "tar-paper" or "skid" shacks, you would have to haul your own water every day from the community well. There was no electricity either. Instead of a refrigerator, each house would have a cellar under the floor of the skid house that could act as a storage space or a cooler for food. These homes were dragged from one boomtown to another as the oil drilling activity would move.

Using resources such as: local experts from the area, community history books, old photographs, artifacts & maps, and internet sites, begin your research to uncover what life was like in Millarville in the 1940's. Compile, organize, and write your findings so that these historical records can be shared. This will create a permanent record of how this community developed.

How do Artifacts tell a story?

As an archaeologist you have been asked to help uncover the past of Millarville. Review the basic rules of how to proceed with an archaeology dig. After you have secured a permit, then, with stakes and string, mark the dig location into grids, While digging, measure your depth and location of any artifacts found. Collect and analyze the artifacts, compare your observations with those made by other groups, and begin to put the pieces and clues together. Record where the objects were found and any other identifying features.

Write an archaeology report based on your field notes. Using your discoveries from the dig, analyze their location and proximity to other artifacts. What are your predictions as to the purpose of the items found? What do you discover about daily life? How did people live? Have
